The Islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides
This is a unique collection of small islands steeped in a history spanning over 10,000 years of habitation. With their outstanding natural beauty, being immersed in their traditions, culture, local industry and wonderful hospitality. Island hopping is a truly memorable experience.
Many say the Outer Hebrides enjoys “the cleanest air in the world” and we wouldn’t disagree! We also love stargazing, as with virtually no light pollution the universe opens with exceptional clarity and the Western Isles are one the finest places to see the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they are frequently called.
Inner Hebrides
The Inner Hebrides is a collection of islands just off the Atlantic (West) coast of Scotland. Skye is the most northerly and around 150 miles to the south is Islay, the most southerly. Skye, Mull, Jura and Islay are the largest and are all inhabited with bustling local communities and economies. There are many others that support small working communities including Raasay, Rhum, Eigg, Canna, Iona (the birthplace of Scottish Christianity in the 6th century), Lismore and Tiree (the most westerly of the Inner Hebrides). Staffa and its Fingal’s Cave is one of the great natural phenomenon on the West Coast, and we visit this by boat when the tides allow.
Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides (Western Isles) lie about 40 miles from the Scottish mainland and are separated from the Inner Hebrides by The Minch, a deep Atlantic Sea channel with a rapid current. The archipelago stretches for over 130 miles and includes Lewis, Harris, North and South Uist, Benbecula, Eriskay, Taransay, Barra and Mingulay. There are 15 inhabited with a population of around 26,000 and over 100 uninhabited islands and skerries (small rocky outcrops). Lewis is the largest island with its capital Stornoway, famous for its delicious Black Pudding. Along with Harris, North and South Uist they have the greatest population.
Itineraries
We love building itineraries with clients none more so than on these islands, where there is so much to see, do and experience. We arrange all the travel and logistics including ferries, accommodation, access and we can also arrange for guides with specialisms including photography, nature, conservation and the environment. As well as Scottish History, Christianity in Scotland, geology, wildlife, crofting and whisky, of course!
